Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced fury after former President Donald Trump charged a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "traitors" and stated they should be taken into custody and penalized "with execution" following their posting of a controversial video.
The Message That Triggered the Controversy
The clip, published on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic elected officials who formerly served in military or intelligence capacities.
"Like us, you all swore an vow to defend and uphold this founding document," the representatives stated in the short video. "Currently, the dangers to our democratic foundation don't only come from foreign nations, but from domestically. Our statutes are explicit, you can decline improper directives, you can decline unlawful commands, you should decline illegal orders. No one has to follow directives that violate the legal system or our constitution."
The Former President's Angry Response
The video message reportedly trigger a angry reply from the former president.
On later in the week, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate message, he wrote: "This represents really serious, and Harmful to our Country. Their comments cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Leaders Respond
Following Trump's statements on Thursday, Top Democrats published a unified statement censuring the comments.
"Violent politics has no role in America," they declared. "Elected officials who were featured in the video all served our nation with tremendous national pride and distinction. We clearly denounce Donald Trump's appalling and harmful death threats against elected officials, and appeal to GOP representatives to vigorously do the same."
The party representatives also stated that they had been in contact with protective services "to guarantee the safety of these officials and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must immediately take down these radical social media posts and withdraw his violent rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the statement continued.
Lawmakers' Defiant Reaction
The representatives who were featured in the video also published a response.
"We are veterans and defense specialists who care for this country and swore an vow to protect and defend the national charter of the United States," they said. "Our pledge continues forever, and we intend to maintain it. No intimidation, pressure, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that important obligation."
"The significant point is that the president considers it punishable by capital punishment for us to reiterate the law," they added. "Our service members should understand that we have their protection as they fulfill their vow to the constitution and duty to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."
They continued: "The entire nation must join forces and denounce the ex-president's calls for our death and political violence. This is a moment for principled stance."
Further Governmental Comments
The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's statements and shared on social media: "It's important to understand: the former president is demanding the death of public representatives."
He stated: "This is an clear THREAT. Every Senator, all representatives, every American – regardless of party – should denounce this without delay and unconditionally."
The Conservative official supported Trump's claim that the Democrats had engaged in "sedition", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have important representatives of the government telling military personnel to ignore directives, I think that represents unprecedented in US history."
The Republican leader also according to sources stated to the press that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the offense of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to parse the language and decide all that."
Administration Statement
During a White House press conference on that day, when questioned by a journalist, "Does the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson responded: "No."
"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the official stated. "There are active officials of the American legislature who conspired to arrange a recorded statement to personnel of the American armed forces, to current military personnel urging them to disobey the president's proper directives."
She stated: "The integrity of our defense system depends on the hierarchy, and if that system is violated, it can result in fatalities, it can lead to chaos, and that's what these elected officials ... are fundamentally supporting."
