{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences near miss with Formula 1 track officials
Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson disclosed he narrowly avoided a potentially fatal collision during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two marshals crossed the track immediately ahead of his car
The dangerous situation occurred on the third rotation when track officials were observed on the circuit as Lawson was rejoining the race following an premature pit stop to swap his broken nose section
Competitor's Live Reaction
Shortly afterward, the Formula 1 racer Lawson radioed to his team engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Could you believe what happened? I nearly... ended their lives"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was observing"
"I rejoined with a brand new hard tyres, and then I approached Turn One and suddenly there were two individuals running across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, truthfully, it was extremely hazardous"
Safety Concerns Raised
"Obviously there's been a failure in communication at some point but I've never encountered that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We fail to grasp how on a ongoing race track marshals can be allowed to just dash across the track like that. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm certain we'll get some sort of explanation, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Governing Body Reviewing
Formula 1's governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is actively examining the events
"After an occurrence at turn one, race control was notified that debris was present on the track at the turning point of that curve" stated the FIA
"In the third rotation, track officials were alerted and placed on standby to access the circuit and recover the debris once the entire field had cleared the area"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had made a pit stop, the directives to deploy personnel were withdrawn and a double yellow flag was displayed in that zone"
"The examination is ongoing what occurred after that point"
