LA Dodgers Hold On in Canada to Set Up Winner-Take-All Game 7 in Fall Classic
The World Series is going to a decisive seventh game after the Los Angeles Dodgers kept their repeat dreams intact on Friday with a three to one victory over the Blue Jays in Game 6.
The defending champions ended Toronto’s late-game comeback with a dramatic final twin killing, stunning a Rogers Centre audience that had come ready to cheer the team's first title in 32 years.
Game 6 Summary
The Dodgers produced all of their scoring in the third inning. With two outs, Ohtani was intentionally walked before Will Smith hit a two-bagger to left to score Tommy Edman. Freddie Freeman earned a base on balls to fill the bases, and Betts came through with a two-run single to the opposite field, handing the Dodgers a 3–0 advantage.
That key hit broke a postseason slump and revived the title holders' aspirations of becoming the first repeat World Series victors since the Yankees won three straight from 1998 through 2000.
Pitching Duel
Gausman had been nearly unhittable to that point, striking out six of the initial seven batters he faced. He struck out eight through three innings, matching a World Series record, but the third-inning barrage proved costly. The Toronto ace ended with eight strikeouts over six innings, yielding three earned runs on three safeties and two walks.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto, in contrast, was solid again under pressure. The 27-year-old right-hander outpitched Gausman for the second time in a seven days, giving up a single run on five base hits over six frames with six strikeouts. He boosted his record to four wins and one loss this playoffs with a 1.56 ERA.
The only run against him resulted from Springer’s two-out base hit in the third, scoring Barger, who had hit a double previously in the frame. That single offered a momentary lift in his return to the lineup after sitting out a pair of contests with an oblique injury.
Relief Heroics
After that, the Los Angeles relievers carried the load. Rookie Justin Wrobleski escaped a jam in the seventh inning, and fellow rookie RĹŤki Sasaki pitched into the ninth before hitting Kirk to start the frame. Barger followed with a two-base hit that got stuck under the outfield wall, obliging base runners to stay at second and third.
Glasnow, the Dodgers' third game starter, entered in relief and got a popout before Andrés Giménez lined to left field. Enrique Hernández made the catch and fired to second to double off the runner, clinching the win and earning Glasnow his first career save.
Next Up: Game 7
The series now comes down to a single contest. Scherzer will start for the Blue Jays, making him the only living pitcher to pitch in multiple World Series Game 7s after doing so in the 2019 season with the Nationals. The 40-year-old inked a single-season contract to pursue one more title and has been a vocal leader throughout this playoff run.
The Los Angeles squad, looking to be the sport's first back-to-back champions in almost 25 years, are expected to rely on Shohei Ohtani for a brief appearance.
