New York's next mayor confirms his intention to make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that was a central issue in his election bid.
An Iconic Home
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors from the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core issue, did not confirm his residency plans immediately following his triumph in November.
"The choice came down to our family's safety and the importance of focusing my full attention on implementing the platform on affordability voters supported," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.
A Fond Farewell
He resided in Astoria, Queens, an area renowned for its diverse immigrant populations and international dining.
"To Astoria: thank you for exemplifying what is great about New York City," he expressed.
"Although my address will change there, it will continue to reside inside me and the work I do," he added.
A Contentious Issue
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani tied his core platform – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.
However his opponents, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the affordable housing despite the fact that he came from a famous family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his time in office, which ended in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a venue for official events, and pushed for significant upgrades of the historic mansion.
A Grand New Home
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience surroundings far removed from his previous Astoria digs.
With its cream-colored walls, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.
Internally, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished consistent with the home's original era.
The property, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, meaning the city regulates on how much building managers can increase rent each year.
New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the housing expenses exceeds the average income.
Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
