Ollie Pope Reinforces Claim to England's No 3 Slot with Strong 90 Versus Lions

It's hard to know how significant of the English team's warm-up fixture will end up being meaningful when their Ashes battle kicks off 10km away at Perth Stadium on the coming Friday – a brief gap in space or time but worlds away in import and atmosphere – but if it achieved nothing more than enhancing Pope's confidence, that by itself has rendered the exercise worthwhile.

England's number three batsman – this fact is undoubtedly completely established – followed his initial innings hundred by notching another 90 in the second, and the most remarkable was not so much the quantity of runs but the manner in which they were scored. On occasion the 27-year-old looked dominant, hitting a dozen fours and a couple of maximums, hitting the ball beautifully but with fierce determination.

It was just a practice match versus a England Lions squad that deployed fully 11 pitchers throughout a contest staged in before a small group of onlookers in a open field, but it was nevertheless very impressive. For the record, the England team, set a target of 202 once the Lions declared their follow-on innings on 251 for six, succeeded by five wickets after Smith sped the team across the conclusion with a series of fours and sixes.

Joe Root clocked up another 31 runs but was less than assured during England's preparatory.

Crawley and Duckett, the remaining significant first-innings' performers, both fell short in the second knock, while Joe Root made additional runs – 31 on this instance – but was far from more dominant, then being puzzled and accordingly dismissed by Will Jacks. Harry Brook met an identical outcome soon afterwards.

Bashir – who ended the fixture having delivered 12 overs for either team – will have faced part of the hitting he confronted rather aggressive. His opening six overs against the Lions went for 56, with McKinney feasting to pitching that if not exactly loose was certainly far from threatening.

After the sixth spell of those deliveries, the English side's remaining three pitchers had conceded nearly exactly the same number of runs – 57 – from 15, though the bowler became a somewhat less leaky later on, allowing 27 from his remaining six. He claimed one dismissal, taking a sharp, low-down catch, leaning to his right side, to conclude Bethell's batting stint for 70, off 80 balls.

Bethell, compensating for achieving just a small score in the initial innings, was among a trio of players with fifties in the Lions' top order. Ben McKinney's returns from opener were more consistent than the scores of their number three: he scored 66 in their first batting effort and scored 68 in their second, using 61 deliveries to reach his fifty, with five fours and a couple six-hit shots, the pair from Bashir's pitching. Jacob Bethell reached 68 before a mis-hit to Ben Stokes at cover position, who held a stooping grab at ankle height.

Jordan Cox exhibited similar consistency, and backed up his first-innings 53 with an additional 57, at just over a run per delivery. There were a few exceptionally beautiful shots on the way, including a straight hit and a pull shot off back-to-back Brydon Carse deliveries to attain his fifty.

Following his absence from the first day of this fixture with a stomach issue and made just the most minor of efforts to the second, Carse pitched excellently when finally afforded the opportunity, with Ben McKinney and Jordan Cox among his three scalps.
