The Porcine Pardon: Hog Named Six Seven Spared by Miami-Dade Mayor.
While perhaps not at the same level as sparing festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued from the start of the onset of a current administration.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future free from concern.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, provided by a local firefighter, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “6-7” – originating from a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The craze became so widespread that a major dictionary recently made “6-7” its top term for the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to kick off the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: happy, varied, and grounded in customs that foster togetherness. Each year, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they marked the pig's pardon.
