The Three Lions Explore for World Cup Training Facilities Amidst Worries of Losing Preferred Site to Netherlands.
England's football governing body has dispatched officials to the America this week to look at potential bases for the upcoming World Cup, amid increasing concerns that their preferred site could be taken by the Holland.
Draw Complexities Alter Arrangements
Head coach Thomas Tuchel had earlier cleared an FA plan for England to be based in Kansas after a pre-tournament training camp in Fort Lauderdale. But, after the recent group stage draw, there are now concerns that the Netherlands, who play their group games in Kansas, will be given first refusal on the chosen facility at Sporting Kansas City—a state-of-the-art centre operated by US Soccer.
FIFA allocates training bases according to geographic location and world rankings if there is competition, with the draw potentially pitting the FA in competition with the Netherlands and Argentina for bases in the tournament's south-central region.
Exploring Alternative Sites
With England's group fixtures set to take place in Dallas, Boston, and New Jersey, the FA is now reportedly looking at other locations on the eastern seaboard. The association started its search for training camps at the beginning of the year, with Tuchel and director of football John McDermott touring possible sites during the Club World Cup last summer.
In spite of this advanced preparation, there was always an understanding that the final tournament draw could significantly alter their logistical arrangements.
Later Round Travel Strategy
The Three Lions have the eighth most arduous group stage schedule in terms of travel distance. Topping Group L would put England on track for a round of 32 game in Atlanta, then a potential round of 16 tie in Mexico City.
- Major Departure: The FA may opt to choose to travel from match to match for the later rounds if England qualify, a significant shift from its usual practice of maintaining a fixed tournament base.
- Tournament Organizers Encouragement: FIFA is believed to be actively encouraging such a itinerant approach for the vast 2026 tournament.
Once the training base is finalized, the FA will focus on scheduling two warm-up matches in Florida at the start of June.
